The movie is based on the book of the same title, by Akiyuki Nosaka, a man who lived the war. Most other movies, animation or otherwise, would turn the camera away from certain details and let the implications hang heavy. Sound – High. The effects of war are depicted as being as arbitrary and merciless as a tsunami. It is the most haunting, heart-wrenching and tragic tale ever told on film, and that includes live-action films, as well.
